Cultivating the Mental Equivalent: How Consciousness Supports Personal Transformation
As August comes to a close, I have been reflecting on a spiritual principle that has shaped much of my teaching, study and personal practice: cultivating the mental equivalent.
In New Thought philosophy, Ernest Holmes used the term mental equivalent to describe the inner state of consciousness that corresponds with the experience we want to create. The idea is simple but powerful: before lasting change appears in our outer lives, something often needs to shift within us first.
Whether we are seeking greater abundance, meaningful work, healing, creativity, stronger relationships, freedom or a new chapter of life, there is a deeper question worth asking:
Have I developed the consciousness that can receive, embody and sustain what I say I want?
Moving From Desire to Embodiment
During my recent teaching on Abundance, Bounty & Consciousness, we explored the seven primary chakras as a framework for personal growth, spiritual consciousness and intentional living.

Each stage offers a different question:
I HAVE — Do I recognize my inherent worth before receiving external validation?
I FEEL — Am I willing to become honest about what I truly desire?
I CAN — Am I willing to make decisions, develop a practice and take meaningful action?
I LOVE — Can I bring compassion and the transformative power of love into my relationship with myself and others?
I SPEAK — Do my words align with the consciousness and life I am seeking to create?
I SEE — Can I hold an inner vision before there is visible evidence of it?
I KNOW — Can I act with intention, continue my spiritual practice and ultimately surrender the outcome?
This journey moves us from desire toward embodiment — and eventually toward trust and surrender.
Spiritual Growth Requires More Than Understanding
One of the areas I am increasingly interested in is the difference between understanding transformation intellectually and actually embodying transformation in daily life.
We can study spiritual principles, teach them and speak about them beautifully while still discovering areas of our lives where those principles have not yet become lived experience.
Recently, I completed my training through the Being True to You Transformation and Psychedelic Integration Coaching Program and received my certificate. I am now moving into my practicum hours.
The experience reinforced something I have explored for many years: lasting personal transformation requires more than insight.
It involves our bodies, decisions, voices, boundaries, relationships, spiritual practices and willingness to be honest with ourselves.
A Simple Consciousness Practice
If you are exploring personal growth, abundance, spiritual transformation or a new direction in your life, try this short reflective practice.

Place both feet on the floor and take several slow breaths. Then ask yourself:
What do I really want?
What would I need to believe about my own value to become available for it?
What is one action I could take that demonstrates I am beginning to believe it is possible?
Transformation often becomes more tangible when reflection is followed by intentional action.
Practice Consciousness With the Agape East Community
Every Sunday, I gather with the Agape East Spiritual Center community in our online Zoom sanctuary.
Our intention is not simply to discuss consciousness, metaphysics or spirituality, but to practice becoming more conscious together through:
meditation, spiritual inquiry, metaphysics, mysticism, embodiment, affirmative prayer and meaningful conversation.

As we move into a new season, consider carrying this question with you:
What is trying to become possible through me now — and am I willing to become the consciousness that can receive it?
